I am getting a divorce from my wife. we seperated 2 years ago and we are just now to the point that the divorce will be final on the 3rd of December. The problem is that I recieved a letter in the mail from the Dept of revenue and recovery stating that we owe $5300.00 for overpayment of AFDC. We recieved AFDC for two months while I was in school and she was unemployed and pregnant. She lost the baby, but aparently continued to claim AFDC. I didn't know about this! now with the divorce so close to being done, is there anything that I can do? I've already taken over about $10,000.00 worth of unknown debt. I heard that there are innocent spouse laws. But what do I need to do to use them in my situation. Thanks!
