Kate, What you are asking about is called a Stepparent Adoption. In order for the adoption to take place the natural father will have to consent or his parental rights will need to be terminated. You may have difficulty terminating his rights since he has joint custody. Look at the specific wording on the legal custody portion of your court order. Debra.
